This quarter, we are highlighting Sidney Smith for our Team Member Spotlight. Sidney has been serving as the Administrative Assistant for The Shealy Group since October of 2016, and has been invaluable since day one! She is responsible for many office duties, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax return processing and general administrative support, and she touches all of our teams’ projects in some way. Her attention to detail and willingness to help with any project she is given makes her an indispensable member of The Shealy Group team.

I asked Sidney to give us some more insight into her professional and personal life, and here’s a look at our conversation:

Angie Coleman: How did you get connected to The Shealy Group and what drew you to working here?
Sidney Smith: My mom has cleaned the Shealy Group office for 18 years. I remember coming with her to help when I was a kid. After having my first child, I was looking for something part time. Out of nowhere, I got a call from Sue saying The Shealy Group wanted to offer me a job. At that moment I knew it was where I needed to be. [Sue Bennet is The Shealy Group’s Accounting Director.]

Angie: That’s such a cool start! What is your favorite part of your role?
Sidney:  My favorite part of my role is that I am accessible to everyone for whatever they may need help with. Each day is different from the day before, so it keeps me on my toes!

Angie: How do you balance family life (with two small kiddos!), especially during our busy season? Personally – I know how difficult it can be with constantly evolving schedules to fit everything in!
Sidney: I recently started full time, and the best thing about it is I’ve been able to work some of those hours from home. This is crucial in how I am able to balance my work/family life. I am still able to do what is expected of me, but I can also break to take care of my kids. It surely isn’t easier than just being at the office full time, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Angie: As an administrative assistant, you manage a huge variety of tasks and keep everyone in the loop and focused. It’s an impressive ability. What skills do you feel make you effective at your day-to-day tasks?
Sidney: It’s hard to talk about my “skills” because I am working among a group of such seasoned individuals. They are so great to me and truly help me more than I help them I feel at times. My best skills that keep me going from day-to-day are: eagerness to learn, attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and a willingness to do whatever is thrown my way.

Angie: You’ve been at The Shealy Group for several years now; what is your biggest achievement/proudest moment at work?
Sidney: A big accomplishment for me was the opportunity to work on-site at a client’s office every week. I felt that made me part of the “team” and it meant a lot to be trusted with that. I enjoy building relationships with people.

Angie: What would you say is a personality trait that is most helpful with your job?
Sidney: Being personable is a trait I strive for because it makes your job easier, your co-workers’ jobs more enjoyable, and clients happier.

Angie: As part of this spotlight, we’d also like to learn a little bit more about your family and personal life. Your husband is a pastor, and I’m sure your weekends are very busy! How does your family “wind down” and relax?
Sidney: I can assure you, there is never a dull moment in the Smith’s life. It seems like we never really “wind down.” We are always on-the-go. One thing we do enjoy when we are able to break away is going to see a movie. If we are staying in for the evening, we binge watch Netflix. Between our vocations and kids, anything to shut off the mind for a moment is a win for me!

Angie: Speaking of your kids – they are adorable! Did you celebrate Halloween, and if so, what were their costumes?
Sidney: We did celebrate Halloween (multiple times!). Malakai dressed up as an OSU football player, and Genesis dressed up as an OSU cheerleader!

Angie: Do you have a role model who inspires you?
Sidney: Honestly, I would have to say that my role model is my husband. I have never in my life met someone like him. He has qualities about him I’m not sure I could ever attain. He truly balances me out and has done more for me than I could ever begin to express.

Angie: You’ve overcome some adversity in your life; do you have any advice for people in terms of persevering and achieving your goals/dreams?
Sidney: I definitely am no stranger to adversity. The only reason I am here today is because I gave my life to God. I surely wasn’t doing a good job at managing it myself! That’s the advice I can give to anyone facing struggles of any kind. I wanted to give up so many times. Don’t quit. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Dreams do not disappear in the face of adversity. Your vision may change, but it may be for the better. No one could’ve told me I’d be where I am today, I wouldn’t have believed them. There was a bigger plan for me, something I couldn’t carry out on my own. My advice in all is never lose hope, and be willing to do something you could’ve never dreamed of.

Angie: If you could travel anywhere (with or without kids), where would you go?
Sidney: Since I was a little girl my grandpa and I have always talked about wanting to go on an African safari. I’d also love to take my family to Disney. Sorry, I can’t pick just one!
